Welcome to the ABC Training Workshop® !

This training program called ABC Training Workshop® stands for ‘Attaining Better Communication’ and aims to refine your communication skills using a step-by-step approach to effective communication. By the end of the training, you should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the use of effective communication skills. The following are the objectives of the training developed on the basis of a needs assessment, as well as a brief explanation regarding how the objectives will be accomplished. Upon completion of the training program, you should be able to:

1. Explain the process of communication, the barriers to effective communication, and how to avoid those barriers.
Harold Lasswell’s process of communication model ‘Who (says) What (to) Whom (in) What Channel (with) What Effect’ will be explained. This process underlines the effect of immediate feedback and encourages ‘thoughtful and considerate’ responses. The barriers to effective communication will also be described, and you will later be asked to identify them.

2. Identify and categorize situations into three aspects of communication:

• Checking for understanding
• Demonstrating empathy
• Crafting thoughtful and considerate responses

You will be given a series of situations which need to be placed into the appropriate category. The ability to correctly identify the given examples will demonstrate your understanding of the targeted communication behaviors. This will help you further understand which aspect of communication on which you need to focus.

3. Check for understanding in conversations while addressing both groups and individuals by:

• Pausing at intervals
• Observing body language and facial expressions of audience
• Asking and inviting questions when appropriate

4. Communicate specific ideas using language appropriate for audience members.
You will learn the importance of tailoring your message to the targeted audience. As future Human Resource professionals, you will be required to communicate with a wide variety of employees from across all levels of the organization. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to make information relevant and understandable to all knowledge and skill levels.

5. Summarize the main points of a presentation and effectively communicate them to others.
You will be instructed on how to recognize the main points of a presentation and recapitulate the information for others in order to help develop listening skills and learn to pay attention to what the speaker intends to convey. This will help develop the skill of looking at the big picture and drawing out the crucial ideas.

6. Quickly formulate appropriate responses to questions.
Providing timely and appropriate responses in a variety of situations is a skill that ties all other areas of interpersonal communication together. By practicing responses, you can ensure that you are able to convey the information needed in a manner complementary to the situation.
